Murbly welcomes the publication of draft regulations amending the Construction Code and the Electrical Safety Code, announced by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ). This update, essential for the integration of charging infrastructures in multifamily buildings, ensures better energy planning and facilitates the adoption of electric vehicles by the people of Quebec.
With these new requirements, building owners and managers will now have to provide all existing multifamily buildings with a suitable, scalable charging infrastructure to meet the growing need for transport electrification.
Mandatory planning strengthens the viability of charging projects
The addition of Article 2-014 introduces comprehensive planning obligations for charging infrastructures in multifamily buildings. This regulatory framework requires that the EV-Ready Plan include:
- The power supply provided for charging, ensuring sufficient energy capacity.
- A detailed diagram of meters and transformers, ensuring a clear view of the electrical infrastructure in place.
- A load calculation based on consumption over the last 12 months, enabling infrastructures to be adapted to actual building needs
- A strategy for the progressive deployment of charging infrastructures, ensuring a smooth and optimal transition to electrification.
This document, which must be kept by the owner and used by electrical contractors when installing charging stations, establishes a clear, structured framework for all future projects.
“This modernization of the Building Code is a major step forward for the electrification of multifamily buildings. It makes it possible to anticipate charging needs, ensure efficient planning and reduce installation costs for owners and condo associations. Murbly is ready to support industry players in this transition and offer solutions adapted to this new regulatory reality.”
– William Lemay-Choquette, Senior Advisor – Multifamily Strategy, Murbly
We applaud the commitment of the Quebec government and the RBQ to this essential reform, which positions the province as a North American leader in the electrification of multifamily buildings.
Murbly: an expertise at the service of multifamily building owners
With these new obligations, Murbly is positioning itself as a key partner to help building owners bring their electrical infrastructures into compliance. We offer specialized services to facilitate this transition, particularly in terms of assessing a building’s consumption profile and protecting its electrical infrastructures.
The Murbly approach means:
- Assessment and planning of charging infrastructure to meet new standards;
- Detailed communication and transparency with condo owners throughout the process;
- Support for building managers and condo associations in drawing up plans and overall reports, in line with RBQ requirements.
- Cost optimization through a comprehensive approach to electrical installations, enabling progressive and efficient electrification.
Owners wishing to install charging stations in an existing building will be required to provide an EV Ready Plan.
- Estimated cost of plan: $200 per housing unit1.
- Objective: Ensure that the electrical infrastructure can support the installation of charging stations for all parking spaces reserved for residents.
An EV Ready Plan is offered by Murbly through its Turnkey Support service: find out more.
